Is there a difference in a muumuu & a caftan?

According to Google… a muumuu is a Hawaiian-born house dress with a simple, tent-like A-line shape, while a caftan is a centuries-old Middle Eastern and North African robe featuring wide, kimono-style sleeves and often elegant draping

I’m 100% good with both AND own several of each! I basically live in them, especially during the crazy, hot, humid weather in Florida.

I just prefer the sound of muumuu whether it’s actually a caftan or not. Just sounds (more) fun, IMO!

What about, is it caftan or kaftan? The spellings are interchangeable, and both refer to the same long, loose, and flowing garment (also per Google).

I own dressy & casual muumuus/caftans. Oh yes! You can definitely dress them up. Bangles, bling & a pair of heels and you’re ready to go just about anywhere AND be comfortable (my main goal after making sure I look “cute” is being comfortable in every situation possible).

What is a Kimono then you ask? A traditional Japanese garment and Japan's national dress. Literally meaning "thing to wear," it is a T-shaped, straight-seamed robe featuring long, wide sleeves. It wraps completely around the body (always left over right, unless dressing the deceased) and is secured by a broad sash called an obi (again, according to Google).

According to this definition, I guess I own a few modern takes on a Kimono too! Mine don’t wrap but just slip over your head or have a hidden zipper for easy access AND more importantly they have the look of a kimono. Mine you can wear with or without the Obi (sash/material belt). I always buy the matching or coordinating obi for the option to use or not depending on the situation and my mood (and how hot it is outside).

Here are a few of my personal favorite go-tos below:

This caftan (the listing spells it with a k) can definitely go dressy! It comes in a few color ways and is simply a show stopper AND at such an amazing price point. I own two & get tons of compliments each time I wear either.

I’m 5’2 & typically wear a small or extra small in most brands. The sizes on these say ‘One Size’ but they work fine on me due to they are supposed to be flowing. Check in the item details before ordering if you aren’t sure about sizing.

I also own two of these caftans (they spell it with a k on this listing too but….) & also love them. These are a bit long on me if I don’t wear a heel or a wedge or belt them but are super cute. They have more of a casual vibe but obviously could be dressed up depending on your accessories. They come in many color ways as well. These are great for vacation because they also can double as a swimsuit coverup! They state they are plus size but again, I wear them. Heck, at this price point it’s worth it to have them hemmed if needed. Amazingly soft, comfy and cute!

This brand in general is one of my (over all) very favorites! I have many (last count was 8) of their various throws around our house (I’ve gifted several of them too - my mother, our grown son and my hairstylist). I own (and love) several of their sweaters, wraps, matching sets , as well as a few pairs of their socks even! Of course, I HAD to try their caftan and then went back for two more colors. I own the black, the grey & the faded rose color in this particular fabric. I also love this caftan of theirs in a different weight & neckline.

I lounge in them, I have my coffee on our back deck in the morning wearing one, I sit by the pool and read wearing one, I sleep in them, I always travel with at least 2 if not more of them. I LOVE them! They wash & dry easily without fading or shrinking. *Follow manufacturers guidelines

They are a bit more expensive than some but I definitely get my money’s worth out of these caftans. You could use these as a beach coverup too if you wanted. They are super soft & breathable. They come in a shorter length too. You can thank me later!

Check in the description of these garments for a range of sizes that will work for. I honestly feel like it’s most all sizes.

Okay, another favorite brand that I love & have (so far) bought two handbags (and this one too) AND their version of a very cool, definitely can go more dressy caftan (comes in several color ways & sizes) but again a little on the pricy side. BUT I think so well worth it! It will be in my wardrobe for years to come.

There are so many options out there. I’m a Caftan Connoisseur & a Muumuu Maven! Dress them up for a nice dinner out or take them on your next resort vacation OR sleep in them. I absolutely love them & have never seen anyone look bad in one.

What’s your favorite caftan, muumuu or kimono? I’d love to know! I’m always on the hunt for my next one to add to my ever growing collection.

Happy Sprucing!
